Gareth Williams/Liine Interview + WHAM BAM panels

A few weeks ago I got the chance to see Gareth Williams from Liine demonstrate their applications at the WHAM BAM show in Hollywood. I haven’t yet acquired an iPad, but will soon and these apps are the first things I’m going to load on there (after my Things app)! He showed Griid with the new Cliip module—the only iPad controller that lets you seamlessly edit Ableton Live MIDI clips. They’ve got other apps like LiveControl, which allows for full control of Ableton Live and the FREE Kapture, a “total recall” Max for Live device developed alongside Richie Hawtin exclusively for his Plastikman Live tour.

The first two videos are from the WHAM BAM show, where Gareth discusses their products and makes some cool noises along the way. I’ve checked out his music, it’s really rad—he goes by the name of Raw Hedroom. Gareth just sent me some sneak peaks of what’s to come, and it’s really minimal and really groovy.

Aside from the presentation clips, I got a chance to sit down with Gareth at the lovely NAMM show and ask him some questions about his company, about inspiration, his personal passion of creating technologies and about musical projects that he’s working on. He proves to be a great interview, although we were both a bit tired by the end of a long NAMM weekend

Another great NAMM Show has come and gone—my 7th show! Every year we do this WHAM BAM event it gets bigger and better and we have more support. Electronic Creatives is all about inspiring people to create their own art, whether it be music, visuals, instruments and the enjoyment of this art. WHAM BAM provided a cutting-edge environment for people to learn, dance and play and showcase products from boutique companies as well as more established ones like Ableton and Roland. Our goal is to create an environment for people to come to outside of the typical convention setting where you can really see the products in use by established artists and presented to a very eager and inquisitive audience.

This year every room was packed with those hungry for knowledge, attending the workshops with Gareth Williams from Liine, Moldover with his Minimasher creation, Futuristic Performance Techniques moderated by me, jamming in the sponsor room with Ableton, Roland, Native Instruments, Livid Instruments and other sponsors, dancing up a storm to electronica pioneers like Richard Devine, Derek Michael, Jimmy Edgar, DJ Kero, Eezir, Dubspot instructors Steve Nalepa & Thavius Beck and watching visuals from VJ Culture and CPU. We put a lot of time and effort and I feel excited to inspire others to create in this type of environment and community.

I moderated the panel on “Futuristic Performance Techniques” with EC friends Timo Preece, Moldover and Brian Trifon, as well as Gareth Williams and Dubspot friends Pat Cupo and Steve Nalepa. Then I got a chance to show off a new set full of live looping, using controllers by WHAM BAM sponsors like Akai, Keith McMillen Instruments, Native Instruments and software by Ableton.

I also attended the actual NAMM show but didn’t get to see much this year because of a multitude of meetings and networking. NAMM in recent years has been much more for the connections than the gear.

I got the chance to interview some of my favorite EC cohorts, musicians and technologists like Brian Trifon and Moldover, part of a new series that I’m doing focusing on what inspires musicians to create and how to help others to be inspired.

EC at The Bridge Tour in Los Angeles-Serato Meets Ableton Live

Last week EC attended The Bridge Tour 2010, a series of events that took place in several North American cities celebrating the official release of the Ableton + Serato DJ/producer program The Bridge. DJ Revolution and DJ Spider represented at Turntable Lab in Los Angeles.

EC’s Director Laura Escudé just completed a video series about how she produced her album Pororoca. Laura worked with Dubspot, where she is an online instructor to make the videos. Check them out!

n these five part video series, composer, sound designer, music technologist, Ableton Certified Trainer, and Dubspot Instructor Laura Escudé gives us a behind the scenes look at the process and workflow during the making her first album Pororoca, which is out right now. All the tracks on Pororoca were started in her small but effect home studio studio set-up, which includes a bunch of MIDI controllers (Novation Launchpad, Native Instruments Maschine controller, AKAI APC40, M-Audio Keystation Pro 88, etc.,) a collection of violins (include a 100 year old German-made violin, which she uses for recording, newer 5-string, electro-acoustic violin she uses for live performance, and a solid electric violin,) two MacBook Pro she uses as mobile-studio. She shows us an assortment of instruments including a collection of flutes, frog percussion, a bliptronic instruments, and a batch of controllers – and all of that is just in Part 1! MAT for Ableton Live

MAT is a cross platform (Mac or PC) runtime application that functions as an alternate graphical user interface (GUI) for Ableton Live®. It was written using the MAX/MSP® programming environment from Cycling ’74® by Michael Atwood, who currently works as an audio technician for Cirque du Soleil’s “KA” at the MGM Grand Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas.

It works by re-mapping the keys on a typical midi controller to different midi channel/note combinations based on which song is currently loaded. This allows the user to trigger an entire show’s worth of scenes or clips in Ableton Live® very easily.
